Report: Tim Cook wants to oversee 'one more major new product category' before stepping down as Apple CEO
Over the last few years, speculation about who will take over as Apple CEO following Tim Cook has started to grow. Most recently, Cook himself confirmed that he “probably” won’t be at Apple in 10 years’ time. Zendesk is looking to grow its customer service capabilities, and today it announced the acquisition of early-stage artificial intelligence startup Cleverly. Financial terms of the deal are not being publicly disclosed at this time and Cleverly has not been entirely public about the size of its funding. Founded in 2019, Cleverly is based in Lisbon, Portugal and, according to its site, has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Analysts: Google to pay Apple $15 billion to remain default Safari search engine in 2021
It’s long been known that Google pays Apple a hefty sum every year to ensure that it remains the default search engine on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Now, a new report from analysts at Bernstein suggests that the payment from Google to Apple may reach $15 billion in 2021, up from $10 billion in 2020. In the investor note, seen by Ped30, Bernstein analysts are estimating that Google’s payment to Apple will increase to $15 billion in 2021, and to between $18 billion and $20 billion in 2022. The data is based on “disclosures in Apple’s public filings as well as a bottom-up analysis of Google’s TAC (traffic acquisition costs) payments.”

Hackers hit Japanese crypto exchange, steal nearly $100 million
Hackers have drained Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Liquid of $97 million worth of Ethereum and other digital coins. 61% of Americans paid no federal income taxes in 2020, Tax Policy Center says
More than 100 million U.S. households, or 61% of all taxpayers, paid no federal income taxes last year, according to a new report. The pandemic and federal stimulus led to a huge spike in the number of Americans who either owed no federal income tax or received tax credits from the government. According to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, 107 million households owed no income taxes in 2020, up from 76 million — or 44% of all taxpayers — in 2019.

Reddit, the self-declared ‘front page of the internet,’ says it is now valued at more than $10 billion after raising an additional $410 million in funding, with the final round expected to grow to up to $700 million. The company continues to build and sanitize its business, removing racist, misogynist, and otherwise controversial communities, as it prepares to go public at some point in the future.

Some Google employees reportedly face a pay cut of up to 25% if they work from home permanently, according to a leaked salary calculator
Google employees may face a pay cut if they decide to work from home indefinitely, according to a leaked internal salary calculator obtained by Reuters. The tech giant has appeared broadly supportive of remote workers since the outbreak of COVID-19, and just last week approved almost 10,000 employee requests to work from home. The firm pushed back its planned return-to-office date in light of the rising number of Delta variant cases, from September to October 18.
